Brenda Berg, the founder of Scandinavian Child, recently received a Women in Business Award from Triangle Business Journal, a weekly business newspaper in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, N.C., area where Scandinavian Child is based.

Berg was among 26 honorees this year. The Journal said the award winners are selected based on the leadership roles they hold in their organizations and their commitment to community service. The winners received their awards during a ceremony in Durham, N.C., last week.

"These winners represent a consummate balance of business success and community building," said Bryan Hamilton, publisher of Triangle Business Journal. "They are leaders who not only have an impressive list of achievements, but are also looked to as role models and mentors for women hoping to follow in their footsteps."

Berg founded Scandinavian Child in 2002 as a distributor of European juvenile products. Last year she led the efforts to acquire one of those companies, Swedish-based gear maker Svan AB, and has orchestrated the relaunch of the brand with additional products. Scandinavian Child continues to distribute Baeba, a France-based maker of feeding products, and Norwegian baby carrier producer lilleBaby.

Berg is heavily involved with several groups in the juvenile industry. She is on the Juvenile Products Manufacturing Assn.’s board of directors and served as chairman in 2010-2011 and Past Chair in 2011-2012. She’s also on the board of directors for All Baby & Child, on the board of advisors for the International Baby Planners Assn. and a voting member on two ASTM committees.

Her community work includes serving on the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce’s education committee and volunteering as PTA treasurer at the public elementary school her children attend.

"I am honored to be recognized as a key influencer within my industry and local community," Berg said. "I have benefited from the mentorship of many others and, in return, I strive to be a positive role model for other entrepreneurs in the area."
